Picturing Urban Renewal is a digital history project dedicated to the human story of redevelopment in cities large and small. We are in the process of building a new website on urban renewal in New York City and the Hudson Valley.
PUR's roots are in New York's capital, Albany, where plans to build the Empire State Plaza (a.k.a. South Mall) led to the destruction of thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses, displacing whole communities. The South Mall resulted in a years-long housing shortage and an equally long construction boom.
At present, we blog, tweet, and post about urban renewal and Albany's redevelopment as 98 Acres in Albany. Soon, we will unveil a new Picturing Urban Renewal website.
