Dr. Joseph and Wardell Robinson purchased 227 Hamilton Street in 1942. The building housed his medical office until the 1960s, but the Robinson family moved out of downtown Albany and into the suburbs sometime in the 1950s. At the time, they were one of a very small group of black families able to purchase housing outside of Albany's racial boundaries.
