142 Elm Street had been home to Angeline Spina and her children since the 1930s. It was built in 1878 and had always been a showplace, known as "The Castle" to neighborhood residents. On the eve of demolition in 1964, Mrs. Spina told a local reporter, "We treasure this house, and it seems a shame that it has to come down. I'm hoping against hope something will happen to change plans for the mall (as the Empire State Plaza was then known)...." The place where Angeline Spina's house once stood is now a parking lot.
