Bronislaw (Browny) Fleszar opened the Calumet Grill on this spot in the 1950s, before the north side of Madison Avenue was demolished. (The bar is just outside the frame of this photo.) The business was known as Beansy's for Browny's son, who tended the bar. During the 1960s, Beansy's, which served beer by the quart, was popular with the construction workers who built the Empire State Plaza. Today, the Excelsior Pub does business here.
