The eleven-story Renaissance Revival building at 830 Broadway was built in 1897 and designed by Cleverdon & Putzel. A Book Row seller was located at the previous building at this site. Its neighbor at 832-834 Broadway was designed in 1896 by Ralph S. Townsend for the Commercial Realty and Improvement Company, also in the Renaissance Revival style. Both feature cast-iron storefronts. 832-834 housed several apparel manufacturers and was the site of a prominent shirtwaist strike and picket line. The building also housed a series of publishing companies, many of which were associated with the Communist Party U.S.A.
