Julian Baczynsky opened his meat market on Second Avenue in 1970 at a time when this section of the East Village was an Eastern European enclave. Selling house-made smoked meats from Polish and Ukrainian recipes, he was popular among locals. While the demographics of the neighborhood have changed drastically in the ensuing decades, the Meat Market, with its original signage, remains. With steady business year round, the weeks before Easter are particularly busy. People travel from all over the city, waiting in lines to procure kielbasa for their traditional Eastern European Easter celebrations.
