About 100 years before the First Avenue Retail Market was constructed at 155-157 First Avenue in 1938, hundreds of people would gather at this very spot on Saturday nights to watch illegal rat-baiting (dog versus rat fights). This horrific “sporting event” took place in the mid-1800s at James McLaughlin’s Dog Pit, located at 155 First Avenue.
This is a difficult story to read, but it's an important one to share, as it says a lot about society in New York City just before and during the Civil War.
