Remarks made about Bert's Busy:1)"Bert's sold everything. I remember buying socks and hair ribbons there. At Holy Name, we had a different color for every Saint and every Feast Day. I would get blue socks and matching hair ribbons for May, Mary's month. Red for June, the Sacred Heart. Purple for Lent. And of course, green for St. Patrick's Day. In those days, you could buy local, up on Ninth or down on Fifth, at a great savings compared to downtown at A\&S or Martins. Parents of large families had to be very thrifty.When I started at Holy Name in 1942, we did not have uniforms as such. We had to wear Middy blouses with a huge ascot bow...red for first grade, blue for second, green for third. Skirt of your choice. In fourth grade, we had to start wearing hosiery. Ugly brown cotton stockings that bagged on our skinny legs. Held up by the hated garter belt. The boys' school outfit was much simpler...navy blue pants, white shirt, ties with colors designating grade. Bert's carried all these items, and outfitted thousands of Holy Name kids." 2)"Back in the 60s after the Beatles hit the turtle neck collar became popular. Rather then buy an entire shirt you could buy the collar and wear a shirt over it. Friends and were informed by Bert they were called Dickeys. He asked what color we wanted. The Beatles wore black. Next thing Bert is screaming to the back of the store “Do we have any black dickeys” We were on the floor." 3) "I remember buying my mom pins and necklaces from there for Mother’s Day or her Bday when I was a kid. It’s a wonder her neck didn’t turn green from all the cheap costume jewelry- but she wore it proudly to church!"

The corner store is a pharmacy named Ballard's. It's presence on the avenue goes back over 100 years. Some comments: 1)"Very often in the ‘60’s my mom would bring us over to Johnny the pharmacist at Ballard’s and ask his advise before having to go to the Doctor’s. He diagnosed ringworm and the salve and care for it! Our neighborhood was the best!" 2)"I love Ballard’s. They take such good care of their customers. I live in NJ now, but I still have all my prescriptions sent there. The drive in is worth it."

A shoe store and a corset store shared the 233 address. A candy store named Ray & Otto's was at 231. Comments about 233:1) "I brought nylons there. They came out of a box. Great memories. Next to it was Red's shoe store. Oh wow I remember buying that thing to hold your stockings up. I think we were allowed to wear stockings in the 7Th and 8Th grade at Holy Name." 2) "Happy birthday wishes to your Mom; that's a great age. My Mom would have been 96 this year. She grew up on Windsor Place a few doors down from Ballards. I only recall Red's being on the corner too; he had those horrible yellow tinted shades on the windows in the Summer, gave me a headache and nausea. My Mom told me how back in the 20s the ladies used to stand on that corner chatting after Holy Name event, card party maybe. A car lost control and ran into the women. My grandmother was there, but not seriously hurt, but her neighbor, Mrs. Clark, was killed. I wonder if your Mom heard of that tragedy. My Mom had told me it happened around 11 PM, when the church bells were playing the nightly Faith of Our Fathers." Comments about 231:"Ray and Otto. Their son was always studying in the back! He went on to be a very educated and respected doctor. I wrote him once, after reading one of his books, and told him how much I loved his mom. He wrote back a very medically detailed response and a sweet thank you about his mom. Comments: "The best of everything came from Ebingers!! Every Sunday after Church...my Grandmother would get her bread and desserts from Ebingers...my favorite part was I would get to pick out my favorite cookies! ( it was always the chocolate sprinkles butter cookies...And Birthdays were the Black Out Cake!!!The best! I loved working there in high school, except when some ladies would yell, NO, I wanted half of the chocolate buttercream not the blackout layer!"

The grandson of the owner of the restaurant near the car remarked: "Thank you to all who commented about the photo of my Grandfather's bar yesterday. As a bit of a follow-up, I'll post photos of my grandparents, taken at the same location, Easter 1965. From 1965 until her death in 1971, Muriel ("Mal") ran the Freezer Fresh ice cream shop next to the bar. When Frank passed away in 1975, the bar stumbled along without him for less than a year and finally closed. The bar opened sometime pre-1940, and the exterior never changed while it was there, and I'm pretty sure not much changed inside! Odd family fact- Both Frank and Muriel, who lived for many years on 20th St., both passed away at the same exact spot, right in the kitchen, she of a stroke, and him a heart attack. I visited the house a few years back with my brother Michael and Cousin Rob, none of us were in any hurry to go into that kitchen!"

Some comments: 1) "The NW corner of 16th and Prospect Park West in 1940 had the store Jack's and a Rand's Cleaner. The address was 210 Prospect Park West. When my wife and I moved to the neighborhood in 1983 at 477 17th Street I believe it was Parkhill's Restaurant." 2) "I knew it when it was Jack's, in the forties. We had to cover our schoolbooks at HNS. If we didn't like using brown paper grocery bags, we were allowed to upgrade to oilcloth, bought by the yard at Jack's. Colorful and durable. The textbooks lasted for years. I used the same books that my older sister used, and she was nine years older than me. If only the public schools would be so thrifty nowadays, our school taxes would be much lower! Jack's had all kinds of housewares. I remember taking some window shades up there,for my mom,to be fitted with new material. Ours was not a throwaway economy." 3)" I don't know what kind of store Jack's was, I do remember my mom buying a mop from Bob's when it was on that corner later on in the 60's?. They had some houseware stuff outside on a decent day and usually Bob's mom was out there watching the goods and selling."

Comment about Jack's: 1) This is slightly (but only slightly) before my time. Growing up around the corner in the late 50's through the 60's, we shopped regularly in Jacks. To the right of Jack's where the bake shop is, I remember there being a fruit and vegetable store. Where the radio(?) shop is in this pic, was a fish market. Where the food center is in this pic, in my time it was, at first, Zaccone's Bakery. Zaccone's was a bread store. We got all of our Italian bread, cookies, etc. from there. They baked their own products elsewhere and this was their retail outlet. They also sold to other stores throughout Brooklyn. Around 1960 or '61, they decided to close the retail outlet and concentrate on only the wholesale side of the business. My mother got talking to Mr. Zaccone and told him how sad she and the neighborhood was that they were closing and how there was no place else in the neighborhood to get good Italian bread. He said to her "So why don't you buy it and I'll sell you the bread." So she bought the business and for the next 10 or 12 years, it was Rose's Bakery (though really it was a grocery store).To the right of this picture, next to the food center that became Rose's Bakery, was Larry's meat market in the original of this pic. That meat market eventually became the original Joe's Pizzeria before he moved to the corner location. I occasionally joke with my kids when we talk about a slice being $2.50 to $3 these days. I ask them "you know how much a slice was when I was a kid?" After they guess, I tell them "you couldn't buy it by the slice. The whole pie was 75-cents." Eventually, the whole pizza went to $1 and that's when he started selling by the slice - - 15-cents a slice.

Comments:1) "I grew up right in the corner house on Fuller Place and Prospect Avenue. The Tampakis family owned the house and we lived upstairs. Then when they sold the house, my parents bought it." (Evidently the Tampakis owned it after 1940. At that time the family of Charles Tenne did. It's interesting at #30 the owner is Abraham Miller. It says that he was the proprietor of a pharmacy. I'd guess he may have owned the Miller Pharmacy on the SW side of Bartel-Pritchard Square.)

The former home of WW1 veteran Emil Bartel. Bartel Pritchard Square is named after him and his friend William Pritchard. Both died in combat in France during World War I in 1918. The family lived there for at least 25 years.

Along Prospect Park West many of the trees have plaques at their base that were installed shortly after WW1 to commemorate neighborhood young men who lost their lives in during the war. One of them is for Herman Morreale. "Men, like Corporal Herman Morreale, the son of Sicilian immigrants and a graduate of Holy Name Grammar School, who joined the Army but was discharged when he was found to be underage. He enlisted a second time." Morreale lived at 556 17th Street when he served in WW1 Comments:1) "Herman was my grandmother’s (Anna Morreale Fischer ) older brother. I know my grandmother lived on 17th street as a child , don’t know exact address. My great uncle Joe lived on Terrace Place by 17 th street when I was a kid, my cousin Herman was named after his uncle." 2\) "Wow! A Mrs Morreale used to be my landlady on 17th St. A lovely lady."

Bob's replaced Bert's (seen in Stop A) Comments about Bob's: 1)"Bob's Variety, as it was known then, started out at this location (referring to a Jack's address at 210 Prospect Park West?), when they bought Jack's. In the early to mid-60's, Bob's moved to 228A PPW which at the time was, I believe, Brunic's Hardware (one storefront off the corner - Burt's was still there at 228 PPW on the corner.) I started working for them in the summer of '68. (sounds like a line from a song). In approximately 1970, Burt closed and they bought the property, breaking an opening in the wall and doubling the size of the store. Around that time, they also bought 222 PPW and opened the housewares store, then later buying 222A and combining those two storefronts as well. In 1988, I bought the business when they wanted to retire. Bob's was founded by Fanny Hyman. Her husband had a long-term illness so she started the business to provide for the family. She had 2 sons, Bob and Morty. They were both young when she started the business, but she named it after her oldest son, Bob, but he did not go into the business, preferring a career in the newspaper industry, so Morty worked in the business. " 2) Iworked at Bob’s for about 3 years in high school in the late 80’s - and worked with Fanny, Morty and Miles. Was a great first job. Working for Fanny and Morty taught me quite a lot - valuable life lessons....3)I worked at Bob's Hardware for Morty and Fannie Hyman all through High School ('78 - '82). They really were fine people and great employers! Morty and his wife Elaine even allowed their oldest son to invite all the employees to his Bar Mitzvah! 4)I still have gift from my children that they bought at the housewares store! Both stores had everything you needed, I remember waiting in line just to ask Morty for advice.

1997 during filming of the movie "As Good As It Gets" Comments: As Good As it Gets was filmed on Howard Place. Spider-Man (2 of them) were on fuller 36 was the main house and a movie w Gina Davis was on Fuller too."

Some remarks from group:1)Red Namoli owned that shoe store. He was standing behind me. Richie Day was also standing behind me as we were being interviewed by some TV news station. Red had started a boys club in the neighborhood and we were getting some notoriety from the news world. Club didn't last too long, don't remember what happened, but this picture is at least 60 years old.2) Yes, Anthony and Donna, that’s me wearing the jacket. Next to me is my cousin, John Pontieri. Came from Italy and stayed with us during his teen years. 3) t's always hard to judge a time period because men's and boy's clothing styles don't change the way women's and girl's do. Think based on old fashioned pram in background and a corset shop on the corner that it is maybe in the 50s. I do not recall the corset shop, but recall Red's Shoe Store being on the corner of Windsor and 9th next to Rae and Otto's for as long as I can remember; did he move to or expand out to the corner? I was born in 1959 so started getting school shoes there in 1965! 4) The corset shop is a riot. I had to laugh at that, too! All the Ladies Unmentionables...out there, in your face. How the Holy Name boys used to hoot and holler and point at the Collette Shop!

Comments: 1)"I remember going to the Venus movie theatre on Vanderbilt & Prospect Ave on Saturday mornings with my brothers Lenny & James. For 14cents we saw 2 movies, a serial, cartoons & a newsreel. For 1cent you could get a half of pretzel stick . & the MATRON!!! Anyone remember? She was part Drill Sargent but with all those kids I guess she had to be." 2)“Yes, it was called the" itch" because the seats were riddled with bed bugs. Your feet stuck to the floor from all the spilled candy and soda. How many times did the film break during the showing ."

Comments: 1)"Does anyone remember Murray’s grocery store on greenwood ave and East 3rd st in 1950s or Murray’s was on the corner. Pete’s butcher shop was next door. Murray move up east 3rd to Vanderbilt st and Pete moved into the corner store.Worked for Pete delivering orders and worked around the store." 2)"I love this picture. I lived corner Greenwood and E.2nd St. The house with the funny roof and gable. My Mom would send me multiple times in a day to Roulston for milk or bread or whatever. The butcher shop was always there, also. When I was a teen and would be walking home from the subway, the boys would be sitting on the steps and waiting to whistle, call out or whatever. Would hear them the whole block. As shy as I was, I hated that. Now I would be right there in their faces to banter with them.Thanks for the pic and memories."

Lewnes Bros Restaurant next to the Sander's Theater in 1940 Comments: 1) Never knew Lewnes owned it. I only remember Park House and then Circles 2) Even after it became Park House, my dad called it Lewnes.... He was born in 1918! My dad too (born in 1924). It was always Lewnes to him! Even when it was Circles! Their signature desert was "The Kitchen Sink.” 3) Always called it Lewnes, in the late 50s moms would meet there for coke and smoke and all the carriages would be parked outside, with the kids in them, couldn't do that today, better times then.it wasn't Lewnes anymore, they had already moved, by time we were old enough to remember .4) The Lewnes I remember was on 9th street and PPW. This is in Barttel Pritchard Square and PPW. The corner store was a Circles Restaurant a few years back. A good friend of mine, Matty, owned it. And many of the waiters and waitresses lived in Park Slope, my home for 50 years.When I was a kid my Dad used to tell me that between this Lewnes (Park House) and the Lewnes on 9th st there was an underground tunnel connection from bootlegging days. 5) I was told the same thing and also there were tunnels under some houses on 20th and 10th Ave,. for bootlegging it was still a great neighborhood growing up. Lewne's. A fine family who served the neighborhood for many years. I loved to go there for their grilled cheese sandwiches and vanilla milk shakes! 6) A 1924 voter's directory has Peter and Charles Lewnes living at 210 Prospect Park West. They were Greek and the original name was probably Liounis.

SOME MEMORIES OF SUMMERS AND STICKBALL IN WINDSOR TERRACE New York Times, Published: August 26, 1987, METROPOLITAN DIARY,by PATRICK FENTON, DEAR DIARY: ..."Memories move through my mind like a reel from an old movie, slowly reviving blurred images: the high curb on the apartment building next to Jack the Wonder Dairy store, from which we bounced a thousand Spaldeens playing a game called off the point; the smell of broom straws burning in a ritual that provided us with stickball bats (the best kind); the Pepsi-Cola billboard behind which we hid the bats each night. It is a bright summer day in the 1950′s and Jack Malone has just sent a Spaldeen sailing over the rooftops just down from McNulty’s bar. I see him standing there on the white-chalked home plate, a frozen tableau watching the ball streak out of sight of the make-believe stadium walls. And there am I, rounding chalked bases. Playing endless games of stickball. On and on through summers that seemed as if they never would end. I turn from Brooklyn and take my place among the throngs of Manhattan, wondering what it was that ever made me dream so longingly of leaving there. "

Some Comments:1) My family bought the house in 1928 I've lived here my entire life. The facade has changed a few times over the decades and I did a major renovation back in 2008 adding and extension to the first 2 floors. I'm pretty sure that's aunt Tess sitting at the top of the stairs. 2) I grew up at 601 18 street with my twin brother joe we were friendly with the Marino’s and the Pisano’s. I remember that the Pisano’s had a great backyard with a big grape vine leading to a nice room in the backyard. We would go visit the Marino’s and play cards in this room with them Sal, Nella, Diane and Lois.I remember Lois had American Flyer trains and we had Lionel.We would watch Softball games in the big lot across the street.I remember the ice cream man would come and after he sold his pops he would make us line up and he would throw ice cream pops then all the kids that lined up. It was great growing up on 18 street

Revisiting his old home in adulthood in 2014 "Those 3 windows on the ground floor were my front windows from 1951 to 1963. Found my Dad’s old rent receipts from the early 1950’s....Rent was $30 a month...4 small Apts in that small building and the landlord spent a lot of time in the basement below my apt. Clotheslines on the roof and an alley on one side. 613 18th St. Home for 12 years...thanks for posting...."

This was the home of former Deputy Inspector Thomas Tunney back in 1920. He was the first owner of the house. Tunney foiled many bomb plots as he was in the charge of the "bomb squad" of that era. A comment:"About 10 years ago I rang the bell of 17 Fuller saying something like, "I'm a neighbor and an amateur historian and I discovered that a famous man once lived here. He may have been the first owner." I told him a little about Tunney but I could see he didn't share my enthusiasm. Maybe I caught him on a bad day or maybe he thought I was a little nuts." Where the barber shop was in 1940 later became a liquor store. Comments: "The owners of the liquor store that was there for many years were the Schafer’s. One of really only two liquor stores right in the neighborhood, Schafer’s on Windsor and Stein’s/Feron’s/Fields’ on 16th across the street. The son Jack Schafer was a teacher at Xaverian when I was there. Also coached Big X baseball.Our dad, Frank Fitzpatrick worked in Schafer’s in the evening a few days a week. Since we were next door, we also stored extra cases of liquor in our basement for Mr. Schafer."

Isaac Asimov lived here in 1940. His parents ran a candy store across the street. Some comments: 1)"Science fiction writer Isaac Asimov father in 1936 bought a candy store , at 174 Windsor Place, (between Fuller Place and 10th Avenue), and the family moved to a house across the street. At various times, Asimov helped out in the family business. It is believed Asimov wrote his famous short story Nightfall in his bedroom. 2) My Mother lived on Windsor Place and went to school with him.I remember going into that candy store with 10 cents and coming out with a bag full of candy.Later, when someone else owned it we called it Buggy Bills because his grandfather or father had a huge mole on his head or face."

Here you can see part of Asimov's candy store on Windsor. Comments:1) Stanley Asimov (Isaac’s younger brother) was my dad’s best friend and they went to PS 154 together. After school, my dad would hang out with Stanley at his family’s candy store (where CBS construction store is now.) 2)that is definitely Asimov's there...the little building! I should know...when I was 7 years old and recovering from a winter of double pneumonia, my Mom sent me round to Asimov's every day for a double malt, to "build me up". Mrs. Asimov became a surrogate grandma to me...she was so lovely. I guess it worked...here I am nearly 70 years later!"

The movie Delivery Man was filmed here in 2013. Comments: "The house next door was owned for more than 20 years by my grandfather William Fitzpatrick who was a tugboat captain." 2) "The family that currently owns 215 has been living on the block since 1940."

The film "As Good As It Gets" used 1 Howard Place as Helen Hunt's home.Comments:1)"My Principal came into my classroom for an informal observation when they were filming the scene on Howard Place. I told him it would have to wait because i was watching them film. He joined me at the window and watched too. I was observed at a later date."

A scene from "As Good As It Gets." Students from Holy Name School are walking down the street. Comments:1) "My son, and his third grade class from Holy Name were in this movie!! That’s my handsome son w his beautiful curly hair! He got a check for 100 dollars from the screen actors guild for his “role” in the movie!!"

Famed Hollywood cinematographer Arthur C. Miller lived at 604 6th Avenue in 1910.

The Minerva Theater was located at 419 7th Avenue.

The Schnaars family lived at 1230 Prospect Avenue in 1940. The family's history in Brooklyn goes back to around 1860 starting with Henry Schnaars who was born inn Germany. They had various businesses, mostly as grocers. Daniel Scnaaars was a 2nd Lieutenant who was Killed In Action aboard U.S. Army Air Corps B-29-40-BW Superfortress in 1944

Shannon's is a florist at 3308 Fort Hamilton Parkway. It's a family business that goes all the way back to 1866. A 1908 article from the Brooklyn Eagle tells about its then 42 year old history.

Famed Assistant Brooklyn District Attorney Burton Turkus lived at 1286 Prospect Avenue in 1920. He was 17 years old at the time.His father Daniel was a watchmaker. In 1940 a funeral home was located there.

In 1928 attornet Burton Turkus had his offices located at 1674 10th Avenue.
