Whitey Lewis, real name Jacob Seidenschner, lived at 75 Market Street in 1900.He was a member of the Lenox Avenue Gang, an early 20th century New York street gang led by Harry Horowitz (better known as Gyp the Blood), it was one of the most violent gangs of the pre-Prohibition era. Gyp the Blood, Jacob Seidenschner, Louis Rosenberg, and Francesco Cirofisi were charged with the murder of Herman Rosenthal, sentenced to the electric chair, and executed on April 13, 1914.

Jimmy Durante spent much of his childhood in the twin bridges neighborhood. He lived at 88 Catherine Street.

Milton and Ruth Pappas lived at 49 Monroe street above the garage where Milton’s father, Gus and his brothers had a garage. He worked for the post office and later moved to Knickerbocker Village.

Morton White (April 29, 1917 – May 27, 2016) was an American philosopher and historian of ideas. He was a proponent of a doctrine he calls holistic pragmatism (a variant of pragmatism) and also a noted scholar of American intellectual history. He was a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Harvard from 1953 to 1970. He was Professor Emeritus in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ, where he served as Professor in the School of Historical Studies from 1970 until he retired in 1987.White was born Morton Gabriel Weisberger in the Lower East Side of New York City. His father, Robert Weisberger owned a shoe store at 48 Catherine Street and later became a NYC councilman from the area.

Nehemiah Persoff lived at 38 Monroe Street in the early 1950's. (born August 2, 1919) Persoff is an American retired actor and painter. He appeared in more than 200 television series, films and plays in his career spanning 52 years. As of this writing he's still with us living in northern California.

Joseph Rumshinsky once lived in Knickerbocker Village. "(1881–1956),Among the significant composers and conductors associated with Second Avenue Yiddish musical theater at its zenith—a list that includes a great many once-prominent names that are now no longer so widely remembered—Joseph Rumshinsky, along with Sholom Secunda, Alexander Olshanetsky, and Abraham Ellstein, is always considered one of the “big four” in aggregate achievement as well as undiminished fame." He wrote the music for Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen.

The famed lawyer and law professor Harry Dow once lived in Knickerbocker Village. "But the story of the man in the photo is anything but typical. In 1929, Dow, a newly minted graduate of Suffolk University Law School, was poised to make history as the first Chinese American admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. And though he couldn’t have known it at the time, he was also on the verge of a groundbreaking career in public service, one that would reflect his selfless values, his indomitable spirit, and the ethos of the institution that first gave him the chance to succeed. The script for Dow’s extraordinary life is now at Suffolk Law. His children have donated Dow’s collected papers to his alma mater-24 boxes of photographs, legal files, letters, press clippings, and other documents-where they will become part of the Suffolk University archives."

The environmentalist and his wife Josephine were living in Knickerbocker Village in 1940. From a 2003 obituary,"“It’s remarkable that he’s been gardening for 30 years, starting when he was in his early 60s,” Hembree said shortly after completing his book about Hatcher. “His life before that involved civil rights and social activism. He’s really a guy who lived a lot of lives and finally settled on one where he could go off by himself in the woods. In 1969 Josephine and Harold Hatcher decided to retire to Spartanburg, South Carolina, from Indianapolis, Indiana, where they had lived for over thirty years. They came south partly because of the warmer weather and the seasonal changes that make gardening a delightful endeavor and also because their daughter Alice and her family lived here.The Hatchers purchased a home with a small lot on Briarwood Road on the west side of town. From their small back yard they could see that the wooded area behind their house was covered with tall pines, mature hardwoods, and even a stream. The land itself had once been home to cotton fields, was badly eroded, and had become a dumping ground for local trash, but even so, the Hatchers could see that it had great potential.Soon after moving, Harold expanded his property by purchasing three acres behind hislot for $2000 and he began to convert the old, worn-out cotton fields into usable land for his gardening projects. The Hatchers then started spending all of their spare time filling in the eroded gullies, amending the soil, building paths and ponds, and planting over 10,000 trees, shrubs, and flowers." As the garden continued to grow through the 1970s, members of the Spartanburg Men’s Garden Club, the Spartanburg Garden Club Council, Spartanburg Community College, and the Unitarian Universalist Church became intrigued with the Hatchers’ vision for their garden and began to volunteer their time and resources to support the garden’s development....." ”

Child psychiatrist Reginald Lourie once lived in Knickerbocker Village. "Babies are very patient. They keep on showing us the problem over and over until we understand. The more we understand what children need, the better we will do in serving them. -Reginald S. Lourie, MD" A nationally acclaimed child psychiatrist and pediatrician, He devoted his life's work to serving and advocating on behalf of children and their families. A founding father of child psychiatry and infant mental health, Dr. Lourie had a profound impact on national policy and programs for children and families - yet he never lost the common touch. With deep compassion and skillful diplomacy, he advocated for and helped create early intervention and prevention programs, including the Lourie Center that now bears his name. In 1990, the then Regional Center for Infants and Young Children was renamed the Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children to provide a living tribute to this remarkable man, who was beloved by his many friends, colleagues, students and patients."

9 Monroe (building farthest right) was where Kremo's market was in the 1950's and 60's. In 1900 a Chinese laundry was there. On. September 3, 1900 a man named John Quinn, living across the street at 10 Monroe, stabbed the owner Sung Lee for refusing to open on Sunday to five him his laundered shirt.

27 Monroe was an Olive Oil Co. in 1940. Later it would become Dave's grocery store. A recollection from my friend Richard who got a lesson in sex education from Dave one 1960's Sunday when he overheard his conversation. He was sent to get tongue for his mother. " My mother loved kosher tongue. When she ate it I had to leave the room. As for the recollection of Dave’s Sunday morning mention of eating his wife the night before, if I had heard that comment at age 7 or 8 when I was picking up stuff to earn my allowance, I probably would have wondered whether she was on a roll or bagel."

Former Knickerbocker Village Cliff Gromer has memories of Gogel's. "The store we most frequented was Gogel’s grocery and deli off Madison on Catherine. George Gogel and his wife Tess worked behind the counters. It was a comparatively small store compared to Kremo, for example. I could never figure out why my mother and father selected a particular store when there was more than one of the same variety.George was a client of my father (a lawyer), and the guy at Kremo was not. So that probably figured into the equation. George was a rotund, very pleasant guy, and his wife was equally pleasant. Even though the store was small, they seemed to have everything you asked for. It was cool seeing them use the reacher to pull down products off the higher shelves.George wrote down the price of each item with the pencil that he kept behind his ear, on the classic brown paper bag. Everything was added up by hand. There was never an adding machine in the store, and the cash register just rang up the total. Gogel’s introduced me to real New York bagels and Italian bread. I was trusted to venture out to Gogel’s on my own, especially on Sunday mornings when my parents could count on a little uninterrupted time together."

More memories of this section of Catherine Street, circa late 1940's, from Cliff Gromer,"Moving down Catherine to the corner of Monroe, was the Normandie Pharmacy. There were at least three pharmacies that I remember in the neighborhood. Normandie, Rich’s on Catherine and Madison and J. Savarese, which was the one we had our prescriptions filled at. I remember splitting an ice cream soda (one glass, two straws) with Linda Trichter when I was even younger. I probably got the idea from an Andy Hardy movie. I remember the adults in the store at the time thought it was “cute."

51 Market Street, also known as the William and Rosamond Clark House is a historic house located between Madison and Monroe Streets in lower Manhattan in New York City. The two-story gambrelled house was built in 1824–25 in the late Federal style at a time when the Lower East Side was an affluent residential neighborhood. The original owner was apparently William Clark, a grocer. The upper two stories were added late in the 19th century.The house has been described as a "superb" example of the Federal style.51 Market Street was designated a New York City landmark in 1965, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. In 1905, and possibly for years before and after 1905, the house was owned by Dr. W.H.Hemingway, who at the time had at least one other address, 105 East 15th Street, New York City. He spent a great deal of money improving and upgrading the 51 Market Street house.
