Cellar doors at 165 John Street, ca. 1975.
The five-story building at no. 165 dates to 1811. It was constructed for George Codwise Jr., and was one of a row of six countinghouses. The buildings original tenants were flour merchants. Likely built in a Federal style, the building underwent a reconstruction in 1835. That alteration gave it a Greek Revival facade to match its newly built neighbors, both the new building (at 181 Front Street) and the redo of 165 John were undertaken by a commission merchant firm. Once only four stories it had a fifth story added at some point in the late 19th century. It still remains shorter than its larger neighbor at no. 181, which had a sixth story added in 1917. It it unclear if the cellar door that remains extant dates to the building's earliest years or its reconstruction.
