Moore-Jackson Cemetery, 1925.
Once the family burial ground on a farm owned by the Moore family, today the Moore-Jackson Cemetery (a John Jackson added to the size of the cemetery when he married into the family) is nestled in between brick apartment houses. The cemetery dates to 1733, when the first burial was made. The final burial was in 1867.
By the start of the 20th century, the cemetery had largely been forgotten and was an overgrown dumping area. In 1919 a survey of the cemetery was conducted and it located 42 identifiable monuments. In the 1920s the cemetery was occasionally cared for, though, as these photos depict, it was still somewhat overgrown. Once again as the years passed the cemetery was forgotten and neglected. A chain link fence was installed in 1956. By the 1970s the local community once again discovered the burial ground and it has been cared for, to various degrees, since. It was named a NYC landmark in 1997. Today only 15 of the 42 monuments extant in 1919 remain.
