In New York City, there are a plethora of vacant properties, many of which remain empty vessels. These properties directly and indirectly affect New Yorkers, as they limit the spaces people can access. When more abandoned buildings exist in a community, there are fewer structures to uplift that community. In addition, many abandoned buildings in New York City have cultural and historical significance, which can be erased through demolition if the building is not properly landmarked. Redevelopment projects should not be limited to restoring buildings for their initial purpose, but buildings should be preserved with integrity and respect for their culture. In the future, new constructions should be sustainable, and serve a purpose for the community in which they stand.
