In the early 1850s Henry Schumacher built a two-story wooden building and established Schumacher’s Lager Beer Saloon and Hotel. The hotel became a welcomed stopping point for Long Island farmers en route to Manhattan. Along with those coming into the city from Long Island, the establishment was also patronized by mourners who were burying their family at nearby cemeteries. During the mid to late 19th century it was common for family outings to the rural cemeteries of Queens and Broklyn on Sundays.

John Niederstein, a German immigrant and cook, purchased the building in 1888 for $28,000 and greatly expanded it. It continued to be a popular spot for cemetery visitors as well as the growing local German population of Middle Village and Maspeth. The Niederstein family operated the restaurant until 1969, when it was sold to Horst and Reiner Herink. After surviving more than 150 years, serving (at least since 1888) beef goulash, weiner schnitzel, sauerbraten and bratwurst, Niederstein's closed in 2005 and the building was razed soon after. An Arby's now occupies the lot.

Albert Schumacher's Hotel - Located at what is now 70-01 Metropolitan Ave. (formerly No. 2001 Metropolitan Ave.). Albert was the nephew of Henry Schumacher who had a hotel across and further up the street that became Niederstein's. By early 1924 it was Martin's Hotel with Martin Blum as the proprietor, in December 1924 he sold the property to Dietrich & Son who were nickel platers. In 1980, Horst Herink purchased the property and the building was torn down to make way for a parking lot for Niederstein's. At right is John Dreier, Florist.

Metzger's Hotel - The Former Metzger's Hotel, on the south side of Metropolitan Ave. west of the elevated terminal (about old No. 1770 Met. Ave.). At the far left of the image is "Henry Arzberger Florist", the old hotel building has a sign in front "John Sonnenkalb Florist". Past the very small building under the shed of old No. 1770 Metropolitan Avenue is the Empire Hotel Buildings (Grafelmann) at 1768 and 1766 Metropolitan Avenue all the way on the right. Currently the site is home to "Rentar Plaza", a mall.

Frederick Grafelmann's Empire Hotel - Two buildings - Grafelmann built the taller building at left. The small building is on the site of the current 66-52 Metropolitan Ave. (west of Myrtle Ave. elevated terminal), and was Grafelmann's Grocery (the hotel was the taller building). Wagon sheds are to the right. In 1922 the small building had "J.G. Wackenhut Florist" sign as its tenant.

Steiger's Hotel - Located on the south side of Metropolitan Ave. (Old No. 1754), between the Myrtle Avenue elevated terminal and the cemetery entrance. Eschelman built and helped run it this hotel. Signs on front advertise Trommer's Malt Brew (a Prohibition Era drink) and Long Island Duck Dinners

Charles Langen's Hotel - (old address 1637 Metropolitan Ave.) Built in 1885 with additions in 1891. This block is now the site of 63-13, 63-15, 63-17 and 63-19 Metropolitan Ave., on the north side. At the old No. 1639 Metropolitan Ave (in the 1891 Addition) is the "Long Island Plate Glass and Mirror Co." on the right is Nadelbach's Grocery at old No. 1643 Metropolitan Ave. This was near the Bushwick Junctions depot.

De La Corte Inn (Della Corte Inn) - East side of Colonial Ave. at Mill Creek (aka Horse Brook), between Waldron St. and Van Doren St., opposite Old Coe House (aka Titus House). The Inn was built 1883, and rebuilt in October 1930. The Long Island Expressway was later built over this entire area. Unidentified woman on porch.

John Rauscher's Hotel. The building was demolished for the widening of Queens Boulevard.
