We are connected with crossed borders not only in a macro-scope world but also in a microscope and virtual world. I was inspired by the images of the actual coronavirus, 5G cloud, corporate logos, and stock market index charts that I then transferred by a digital decal technique. These images of the living virus, consumerism, and the trace of technology create a visual metaphor that expresses the relationship between the never-changing human nature and the continuing change of our physical world. I started to learn ceramics from October 2019 and found myself addicted to it, however, the COVID-19 kept me away from the ceramics studio. These pieces are valuable for me because they marked my progress in 2020. The inspiration for this piece is my cat named Sausage. Sausage is a blue cat. Artist: Marina Nebro Title: TJ Memorial Medium: Brushed Cat Fur, Embroidery, Dried Flowers, Mixed Media Description: Our family cat, Truffle Junior (TJ), was hit by a car on the morning of May 18th. He was outside, TNR’d cat, and also the litter mate of my own cat, Slinky. Using felted fur that I brushed and saved from Slinky, I crafted a whimsical homage to TJ. His passing was extremely tragic, and I believe in some ways connected to the pandemic. With fewer cars on the streets, I noticed increased reckless and speeded driving. His death was needless and tragic. Artist Statement: I do not see myself as an artist, but more as a creative. I use visual art as a way to work through emotions, current events, and my understandings of myself and my place in the world. I can hear the music now and see her playing with exuberance and joy. This is another collage from the Covid19 “stay at home” quarantine. To my surprise, it took on a life of its own as a chaotic fusion of shapes and energy, my subconscious feelings of the pandemic. Artist Statement: These new colleges were during the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic to the present day. I call these works spontaneous because they are not planned out, they just evolve. They are chaotic with a form of kinetic energy that now I see as a release of my fear, isolation, and the unknown of a “new normal” during these difficult times. The complex and intertwined pathways of my subconscious mind have confusion, fear, sadness, and anger as well as happiness, excitement, and passion. I always carry those feelings within me and I take them in. I drill down into my deep mind ever in search of inspiration. I also penetrate the minds of people around me with this same intensity and focus. It is difficult to know which feelings coming from me or other people. But after finishing this artwork I came to a conclusion - my perception of you is a replication of me; my reaction to you is an awareness of me. This work is a reflection of my journey to release the tangled feelings and emotions that have been deep down in my mind and aware of what I am. Artist Statement: I recognize the nature itself is unique and beautifully irregular. It frequently delivers countless and unexpected concepts that are reflected in my art. As an artist, I am responsible for creating the beauty that exists beyond my vision with my craftsmanship. I believe that craftsmanship is a perfect execution of my imaginations that draws from passion, creativity, and patience. When making art, I feel the source of freedom that is inside of me. My art-making confronts the disconnect between an understanding that humans possess the most developed brains on the planet, yet also exhibit the most broadly destructive and short-sighted thinking of any species. Through painting I think through the question of why humans continue, seemingly oblivious, on a path of self and planet destruction. I paint landscapes of the Anthropocene using molecular and macro-scale imagery to suggest tensions between two cosmologies: the intelligence of the system of Earth vs. humans’ belief in ever greater consumption and novelty.
