An Introduction to the Public Buildings Inventory
Since the Public Buildings Inventory was published in 1977, the Conservancy has worked to preserve and highlight the buildings in it in numerous ways. Here are some examples. You can view the Public Buildings Inventory Index here.
Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House
Starting in the 1970s, we advocated for the adaptive reuse of the U.S. Custom House at Bowling Green. Today, the building houses the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.

Erasmus Hall High School
We recently advocated for the restoration of the original Academy building located in the courtyard of the Erasmus Hall Educational Campus.

Newtown High School
We awarded the restoration of the Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens a Lucy G. Moses Award in 2011.

Public School 17
We provided funding for the restoration of the entry portico that had been damaged in a fire. The building currently houses the City Island Historical Society and Nautical Museum.

Building D
In 2020, we provided emergency grant funding for stabilization work on a decorative ceiling in Building D at Sailor's Snug Harbor. The building currently houses The Noble Maritime Collection.
