"Exterior view of houses located at 41 and 43 Greene Avenue, purchased as a clubhouse by the Apollo Club." {{According to Suzanne Spellen at Brownstoner, "The Apollo Club was initially, a wealthy men’s singing club...It was an amateur singing society, one of many that were organized throughout Brooklyn." Spellen goes on to say that "The club was popular for over 80 years. During the 1940s and ‘50s, they were especially popular once again, and under the baton and leadership of Alfred Boyce, they performed with professional singers and instrumentalists at BAM, Carnegie Hall, and across the city...many performed with the Metropolitan Opera, the NY Philharmonic, and other top musical organizations." Unfortunatly, the club underwent financial strain in the 1960s, and disbanded in 1966. The Apollo Club building has since been demolished and today, Greene Avenue Medical Suites stands in its place. "Clermont Ave., east side, south from Lafayette St., towards Greene Ave. The view shows the upper half of the tower of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah. August 2, 1927." {{According to the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, "James H. Giles is believed to have designed the Greene Avenue church, which is similar to the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, built in 1860-62 by Grimshaw & Morrill, in that it has two unequal towers flanking a prominent facade, and features round arches. In 1890, the church was renovated by architect R.H. Robertson, who added a beehive spire on the taller tower. Robertson also built the ornate porch, designed a new chapel, and redecorated the chancel in the Byzantine style." Unfortunatly, "On February 10, 1969, the church was destroyed in a five-alarm fire. More than 40 companies and 200 men, some from Manhattan, were called to the scene, but efforts were hampered by snowdrifts and high winds." Urban Archive sums it up well in their story, "Brooklyn's Show Street: Clinton Avenue", where they share that "Clinton Avenue contains some of Brooklyn’s finest 19th century architecture, including the Gilded Age mansions that made it the borough’s most fashionable address. A walk down the length of the avenue tells the story of this transformation: from the provincial farming community shaped by a handful of prominent landowners to a “Gold Coast” boulevard of grand Renaissance Revival buildings, and later to the tension between wartime housing needs, development, and the nascent historic preservation movement."}}

The apartments just beyond are #371 Waverly Avenue." {{This short block and its immediate surroundings are a beautiful example of Jane Jacobs principles: mixed use development, the preservation of old buildings, sidewalk activity, and quality open space! The structures pictured here are largely unchanged since 1958. What was once a liquor store most recently housed Aita Pizza. Barrack's Groceries is now home to Greene Ave. Dry Cleaners, with New Hong Cheung Chinese restaurant nextdoor (their steamed dumplings are a must!). Unfortunatly, a fire in 2019 temporarily shuttered Aita, but the neighborhood hopes it opens again soon. Not pictured is a popular playground across the street, which is always full of activity on its racquetball and basketball courts.}}

"Southeast corner of Washington Avenue and Greene Avenue. 395 Washington Avenue." {{Amazingly, this structure looks the same today as it did in 1958. It is one of the few surviving free-standing homes in the area with a large yard. According to Suzanne Spellen for Brownstoner, it was built in 1872 for Freeborn Smith, who was a wealthy piano manufacturer. It has been listed for sale for a while. One can dream!
