Atlantic Avenue was originally a private road that led from Robert Patchen's farm to the East River. It was likely laid over an American Indian Trail, as many of the major thoroughfares in Brooklyn were. The road was incorporated into Brooklyn in 1816 as "District Street," which was then renamed to "Atlantic Street" in 1855 and 1870, declared an Avenue. The bustling roadway is chock-full of storefronts and businesses.
