Flatbush Avenue (vicinity of Brooklyn College). {{This cute little building is still here. It's got an H\&R Block on the lower floor.}}

“Open larger branch–The new quarters of the Flatlands office of the Flatbush Savings Bank are now open, according to John S. Roberts. president. The new building is located at 1550 Flatbush Ave., several doors from the bank’s former Flatlands office, and it has been constructed and equipped to offer every convenience and comfort to employees and the public alike. Safe deposit ffacilities are available for the first time at this office.” {{This bank has lost a little bit of its luster, but it still serves the community as Sterling National Bank.}}

"Air view of the Wood-Harmon tract in Flatbush which has been recommended by City Planning Commissioner Sullivan as the site for new $13,000,000 Brooklyn College. It is bounded by Ocean Ave. on the west, an irregular line between Avenues G and H on the north, Nostrand Ave. on the east and the Bay Ridge division of the L.I.R.R. on the south." {{A central part of the community, it's hard to imagine this neighborhood without Brooklyn College! Today, this CUNY school offers 82 undergraduate programs, 74 graduate programs, and 20 certificates and advanced certificates and diplomas in wide array of fields. In 2019, 17,811 students were enrolled, comprising individuals from 143 countries, speaking 92 different languages.}}

"Aerial view of Brooklyn College, with athletic field in foreground; scattered figures on athletic field and surrounding areas." {{This track has since been developed for a newer part of the campus, including James Hall and the West Quad Center. Designed by Rafael Viñoly and constructed in 2009, the latter is a recreational facility boasting a great pool. Community members can join and take a dip!}}

"Midwood High School, a large, four-story, brick building with tower, located at 2839 Bedford Avenue." {{Midwood High School is another defining feature of the neighborhood and has an enrollment of nearly 4,000 students. Like Brooklyn College, it is a result of WPA efforts.}}

"Ditmas farmhouse, a three-story clapboard house with sloping roof and shuttered windows at 150 Amersfort Place in Flatlands; overgrown lawn with trees and bushes, unpaved road and broken wooden picket fence in foreground." {{The Ditmas Farmhouse was built in 1827, and occupied by members of the Ditmas family. Although there had been attempts to preserve the historic house, it was demolished in 1961 (the Landmarks Law wasn't passed until 1965). The Brooklyn College Student Center, built in 1962, is now on this site.}}

Image includes snow-covered ground and fence along front of property." {{According to an article in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle from April 22, 1930, this was the home of Andrew Ditmas whose family owned a significant amount of farmland in the area (including nearby Ditmas Park). The name originated with Jan Jansen Van Ditmarsen, and is also reflected in Queens as "Ditmars." Shortly after this article appeared, the house at 60 Amersfort Place was demolished to make way for three mid-rise apartment buildings, including mine! This block was redeveloped at approximately the same time as Brooklyn College.}}

The tracks of the Ocean Avenue trolley line can be seen running along Farragut Road." {{The Ocean Avenue line connected Sheepshead Bay with Crown Heights, and was discontinued in 1951. There may no longer be a need to dodge trolleys, but this is still a dangerous corner. Traffic flows quickly up and down Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn's longest street. Also note the pre-war apartment buildings happily coexisting with the single-family homes.}}

"Waldorf Court, Fiske Terrace, Flatbush, Brooklyn, N. Y." {{Fiske Terrace and Midwood Park comprise approximately 250 custom, freestanding houses. The neighborhoods were developed by the T.B. Ackerson Company and John R. Corbin Company at the turn of the 20th century. The two planned developments were designated a historic district in 2008. This particular house is Colonial Revival with Queen Anne elements, and built between 1905-7.}}

"#1676 Glenwood Road, (Dr. S. Schiowitz, osteopathic physicians office here) on southwest corner of East 17th Street and Glenwood Road." {{This house is also in the Colonial Revival style and dates to 1908. Many movies and TV shows have been filmed here, not necessarily to represent Brooklyn or New York City, but more suburban areas.}}

"1427 Glenwood Road (between Rugby Road and BMT cut)." {{West Midwood is another planned community, developed in the early 1900s by the Germania Real Estate Company. I like to run up and down these streets. Car traffic is light and there is a lot to look at!}}

"N.E. corner of Foster Avenue (at right) and E. 17th Street." {{For nearly 50 years, a restaurant called Mamma Lucia's occupied this storefront. It was a classic red sauce joint with incredible atmosphere (and only average food). It is now a bar that we frequent called Rusty Nail.}}

"Newkirk Avenue station BMT. Brighton line." {{Sitting above the rail line, Newkirk Plaza is often credited as the first outdoor mall, dating to 1908-13. The plaza and avenue are named for the Nieukercke family who emigrated from Holland in 1659. It means "new church." Today there is a great pizza place, fresh fruit stand, liquor store, hardware store, coffee shops, several bodegas, take-out joints, and a couple of bank branches. Under normal circumstances, I take the B from here to get to MAS!}}
