Offering a complete contrast to many contemporary buildings which are totally devoid of ornament, this structure has scarcely one square inch of surface which is not decorated. The salamander, symbol of Francois I, is much in evidence, and most of the ornament here employed is that borrowed from Italy during the early phase of the French Renaissance.
