Statue of Liberty
This gift to the people of the United State from the French people is magnificently situated at the "sunset gates" of the harbor. It is superimposed on an island, a star fort (Fort Wood), and a base especially designed for it in monumental Neo-Grec by Richard Morris Hunt. The statue itself was conceived by the French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi and the engineering for the frame which supports it was done by Gustave Eiffel, designed of the Eiffel Tower in Paris
