Since its construction in the 1830s, the building has served an essential function. It is one of a set of four nearly identical buildings within Fort Jay that have been in continuous use as quarters for troops and officers garrisoned on the Island. Despite alterations over nearly a century and a half, this two-story brick building with monumental two-story portico essentially retains its original architectural character.
