Monument to Civil War veteran Lieutenant William Moir Smith (1839-1861), ca. 1880.
William Moir Smith, a Union officer during the Civil War, fell mortally wounded at the First Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861. He was just 22 years old. The monument is a tribute to his military service, adorned with items from the typical uniform of a Union soldier, including a forage cap and infantryman's belt set with a cartridge box, cap box, and bayonet scabbard. Additionally, the laurel leaves on the stone symbolize victory and eternity.
