Mausoleum of Stephen Whitney (1776-1860), ca. 1875.
The mausoleum of merchant, cotton speculator, and real estate investor Stephen Whitney occupies a prominent spot atop Ocean Hill in Green-Wood. When Whitney died in 1860, he left an estate estimated at $15 million (close to $400 million today). The Gothic Revival structure has an octagonal plan with a copper roof and gabled entry vestibule. Each of the eight sides features a dormer with a stained glass window. Also known as "Whitney Chapel," it has a desk and bench inside for a priest or devotee.
