Thee new H. C. Bohack Company store on Henry St. and Love Lane was so popular that at the time of its opening in 1943, it was cited by the Brooklyn Heights Association as "the best improvement on the Heights during the past year."

Founded by Henry. C. Bohack, a German Immigrant, Bohack's was a New York City chain of grocery stores. Offering everything from fresh meats and vegetables, Bohack founded his first store on Fulton Street in 1887, the business quickly expanding.

Going public in 1965, Bohack eventually grew too large, buying out other supermarkets and taking on large amounts of debt. Eventually, in 1977, Bohack went bankrupt and closed down.

However, Bohack's wasn't the only Grocer to cause a stir amongst Brooklynites. The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company was another New York brand, founded in 1859 by George Gilman. Initially a store for tea and coffee, the brand expanded into groceries and became the largest grocer in America.

What made the hundreds of shoppers (pictured here) line up for blocks outside the "A\&P at 173 Atlantic Avenue was the special sauce that made The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company so famous. It was an innovative supermarket because it offered Americans a vast assortment of different options that weren't available at local grocers at a low cost. You went to A\&P because it had food you couldn't get anywhere else.

However, even the once-dominant A\&P couldn't last forever. Highly leveraged from its acquisition of Pathmark, A\&P suffered during the Great Recession. In 2015, The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company filed for Chapter 11 after 156 years in business and ceased operations.
