This walk is made in partnership with Landmark East Harlem and Uptown Grand Central for the MAS Jane's Walk 2021!
Landmark East Harlem is a coalition of organizations and individuals whose mission is to give the community of East Harlem an ongoing voice in how our neighborhood is developed and to support development that preserves the unique cultural and historical significance of the neighborhood. Our mission is to protect buildings; districts of architectural, historical, and cultural significance; and outdoor artworks in East Harlem using local landmark designation, State and National Register listing, and various other preservation tools and incentives.
Uptown Grand Central is a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming East 125th Street into a thriving corridor by delivering programs that put advocacy into action through collaborations with businesses, residents and neighborhood organizations across East Harlem.
In this tour you will virtually wind through the streets of lower East Harlem and discover surprising histories behind historic neighborhood structures while gaining a front row view of some of the culturally significant murals, mosaics, and other street art for which East Harlem is well known.
Sites include the childhood home of actress Cicely Tyson, landmark-designated buildings like Hope Hall (a former police precinct station), MNN’s El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center (a former firehouse), Julia de Burgos Latino Cultural Center (formerly P.S. 72), St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church, and the landmark designation-worthy Metropolis Studios (formerly an Oddfellows Hall). Along the way, we will see murals and mosaics by James De La Vega, Manny Vega, and Yasmin Hernandez, three-dimensional artworks by Marina Guttierez, Naomi Lawrence, and Genevieve Andre, and much more.
