Did you know there is a zoo in every borough? The Bronx Zoo opened in 1899, and to this day it is one of the largest wildlife conservation parks in the U.S. One of five organizations run by the Wildlife Conservation Society, it offers city dwellers a window to the natural world more than 6,000 animals who call its 265 acres home.

The Central Park Zoo is one of the oldest municipal zoos in the country. While it was not included in Frederick Law Olmsted's first blueprints for Central Park, in 1861 New York State Legislature decreed that a zoological garden be built in the park. Known as The Menagerie, the zoo saw 7,000 visitors a day by 1873, drawing crowds for its large animals, such as buffalo, elephants, zebras, and the exotic and rare "tiglon"—the offspring of a female African lion and a male Siberian tiger. Within a century, most of the larger animals would be transferred to the other zoos in the city more equipped to keep them than the smaller enclosures in Central Park. However, you can now visit the sea lion exhibit, seen here, in Phase 4.

Prospect Park Zoo formally opened in 1935 as part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project led by former Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. The site had been home to a menagerie since the late 1800s. This popular Brooklyn locale is also part of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Botanists Nathaniel and Elizabeth Britton founded the New York Botanical Garden in 1891. Next door to the Bronx Zoo, it boasts 250 acres—larger than any urban garden in the U.S.

The Polo Grounds, which included the former stadium for the New York Giants baseball team, is now a public park in Washington Heights. The Giants may have moved to San Francisco, but the Yankees and Mets can now resume playing in Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, respectively—although without crowds.

The Statue of Liberty National Monument is managed by the National Park Service and sits on Liberty Island off the southern tip of Manhattan. A destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike for those interested in U.S. immigration history, Liberty Island has re-opened to the public. The Statue of Liberty interior its base, pedestal, crown, Museum, and all of Ellis Island Island will remain closed.

The 102-floor observation deck of this iconic 1931 architectural landmark is open to the public, but with many safety precautions in place.

Until 1996, Governors Island was a military base for the US Army. In the following two decades, the National Park Service and The Trust for Governors Island developed the Island into a public park, accessible to visitors by ferry. It reopened on July 15 with ferries running at limited capacity.

This photo shows the elevated train tracks on 10th avenue, which was operated by New York Central Railroad in the 1800s. Once a bustling route on which millions of packages of meat, dairy, and produce entered the city, the tracks were obsolete and abandoned by the 1980s. Since then, they have been revitalized and converted into "The Highline" a public greenway in Manhattan's meatpacking district. The Highline will once again welcome visitors in late July.
