Whitney Mansion, 1895.
Constructed in 1875 for millionaire Frederick W. Stevens and designed by George Harney, the mansion was filled to rafters with antiques and furnishings that Stevens purchased in Europe. After Steven's passing, his widow sold the home to Oliver Payne who gave it to his sister Flora and her husband William C. Whitney. The Whitney's had the home remodeled by Stanford White, but only lived their briefly as Flora died in 1893 and William remarried and moved to a different Fifth Avenue mansion. William's son Harry Payne and his wife Gertrude Vanderbilt lived in the home until 1907 when it was sold and demolished. In the 1920s the Heckscher Building (also called the Crown Building) was erected on the site.
