Academy of Music, 1909.
The Academy of Music opera house, opened in October 1854 with a production of Vincenzo Bellini’s ""Norma."" That opera house was destroyed in a May, 1866 fire. (The building pictured above is the second Academy, opened in February 1867).
In 1887, the Academy of Music, no longer able to compete with the popular Metropolitan Opera uptown, was sold and to a theatrical venue. Pictured above in 1909, the marquee advertises a production of “Brewster’s Millions” starring Edward Abeles.
The building was demolished in 1926. Today its site is occupied by the Consolidated Edison headquarters, a 24-story Beaux Arts skyscraper.
