McSorley’s Old Ale House is the oldest “Irish tavern” in New York City, though its claim to have been established in 1854 is questionable. Immigration records show that founding proprietor John McSorley arrived in New York in 1851, but city records indicate that the site on East Seventh Street was vacant through 1858, with a two-story building recorded in 1861 and the present five-story structure in 1865. It is, however, possible that the purported 1854 tavern was an unrecorded building (ad hoc frame house “shanties” were not uncommon at the time).
