Fountain at Bethesda Terrace, ca 1890.
The Angel of the Waters statue atop the Bethesda Fountain is the masterpiece of sculptor Emma Stebbins. She created the piece in the 1860s while living in Rome with her lover, the actress Charlotte Cushamn. With this commission she became the first woman to create a piece of public art in New York City. Though designers Olmstead and Vaux wished to limit any "artificial" additions to their natural landscape, this sculpture was the only one sanctioned as part of the early design and construction of Central Park. When the statue was unveiled in 1873 it was met with mixed reviews, though it has become an icon and well-loved feature of the Park.
