Gravesend Cemetery, 1923.
This cemetery dates from 1643, the year that Europeans arrived in this area. According to local lore, Lady Deborah Moody, the founder of Gravesend, is buried somewhere in the cemetery in an unmarked grave. The oldest headstone currently visible in the cemetery is dated 1724. The 20th century was not kind to the graveyard and by the 1970s it was overgrown and garbage strewn (including rusted abandoned cars). In the decades since then the cemetery has been more thoughtfully cared for, with landscaping and the installation of historically informative signage.
