Mortimer Building, 9-11 Wall Street ca. 1919.
50 years before this building was erected, Richard Mortimer built a four-story brick building in the same spot. After years of disrepair, the building was torn down and replaced with the Mortimer Building by the executor of the Mortimer estate W.Y. Mortimer.
Completed in 1885, the Mortimer Building was used entirely for office space for lawyers, brokers, and bankers. After its construction, the New York Times detailed the interior, describing a light-filled space with wainscotting in marble and mahogany walls, accompanied by iron and stone staircases. The building was touted as completely fireproof. The building adjoined the New York Stock Exchange until it was acquired by the Exchange in 1918 in order to consolidate and make room for additional trading floor space.
