Paper Mill Workers, Salisbury Mills
This photograph shows men and women on the factory floor of a paper mill in Salisbury Mills, N.Y. It is most likely the Arlington Paper Mill which was situation edge of a rocky gorge on Murderer's Creek. According to an entry in "The History of Orange County, N.Y." which was published in 1908, the Arlington Mill was the principal industry of Salisbury Mills. The oldest part of the mill was built about 1840 by Isaac K. Oakley. This mill manufactured the best grades of book paper, producing over 24,000 pounds of paper daily, which went to publishing houses in New York and other major cities in the U.S., England and Australia. The proprietor of the mill was H. Powell Ramsdell of Newburgh.
