A Walk Down Grand Street
Grand Street is the central artery of one of Newburgh's Historic Districts. The street is lined with cultural and religious institutions, alongside many residences. Let's take a walk through Grand Street's historic past.

76 Grand Street
This mid-19th century mansion was part of the Holden Home for Aged Adults until it shuttered in 1916, when this photo was taken. The Red Cross took over in 1917 to use the space as their volunteer headquarters during War War I.

90 Grand Street
In the 1930s, this was Hotel Washington. According to a heritage map, it was "the mainstay of government officials, powerful corporate bigwigs, and the wealthy." Today, it is an apartment for seniors.

100 Grand Street
The Newburgh Free Library was built in 1876 at 100 Grand Street. The library and its collection of over 36,000 volumes moved to 124 Grand Street in 1976 and the original building was occupied by the Hudson Valley Christian Church.

Grand Street School
The kids in the photograph were students of the Grand Street School. It was built as an elementary school in 1872, known as the Grammar School No. 2. After over 100 years, the building was converted into apartments.

118 Grand Street
Today it's a parking lot, but in the early 19th century this was a group of federal-style row houses all built before 1840. Here on the corner was the home of the Davis family.

120 Grand Street
Andrew Jackson Downing and Calvert Vaux designed this home which was completed in 1852. Its interior of the home was destroyed by a fire in 1981, but its shell remains. Most of the area surrounding was razed urban renewal of the 70s.

The Palatine Hotel
The Palatine Hotel's opening signified Newburgh's coming of age as a major city in 1893. The Newburgh Sunday Telegram said of its debut: "resplendent with brilliancy, everything new, spic and span."

Dutch Reformed Church
This church, built in the Greek Revival Style, heavily leans on Athen's Temple of Ilissus for inspiration. This National Historic Landmark was designed by American Architect Alexander Jackson Davis in 1835.

160 Grand Street
This property was moved around 1835 by lawyer Phineas Brown and retired merchant William Roe. It was called "The Inn" in the 1920's and later Miss Mackie's School.

228 Grand Street
This home designed by Newburgh architect Frank E. Estabrook was built for Captain George Woolsey.

Also designed by local architect Frank E. Estabrook, this was the residence of Charles J. Lawson.
