Described as the “One with Bite” Barq’s Rootbeer was created by Edward C. Barq Sr.
Barq was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1871. He started his higher education at Tulane University but finished at the University of Paris. After his return, he worked as a chemist in a sugar refinery and opened Barq Brothers Bottling Company with his brother, Gaston. Tragedy struck when Gaston died in December 1892. Edward continued the business , and in 1893, he exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair and won a gold medal for his first soft drink, Orangine. Edward continued the Bottling business.
